How to calculate VAT
Adding VAT means multiplying the net price by the VAT rate and adding the result to the original amount: gross = net × (1 + rate). Removing VAT from a price that already includes it works the other way round: divide the gross price by (1 + rate) to get back to the net amount — you can't just subtract the rate as a percentage of the gross figure, since that percentage was calculated on the smaller net amount, not the gross one.
Worked example
A net price of £250 at the standard 20% rate: VAT = £250 × 0.20 = £50, so the gross price is £300. Going the other way, a gross price of £300 at 20% VAT: net = £300 ÷ 1.20 = £250, and the VAT portion is £300 − £250 = £50 — the same figures, worked in reverse.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate VAT on a price?
To add VAT to a net (pre-VAT) price, multiply it by the VAT rate and add that to the original amount — e.g. £100 net at 20% VAT is £100 + (£100 × 0.20) = £120 gross. To remove VAT from a gross (VAT-inclusive) price, divide it by 1 plus the VAT rate — e.g. £120 gross at 20% VAT is £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net.
What is the current UK VAT rate?
The UK standard VAT rate is 20%. A reduced rate of 5% applies to some goods and services (e.g. domestic energy), and certain items are zero-rated (0%) or exempt entirely. This calculator defaults to 20% but accepts any rate.
What is the difference between net, VAT, and gross?
Net is the price before VAT is applied. VAT is the tax amount itself. Gross is the final price a customer pays, which is net plus VAT (net × (1 + rate)).
How do I work out how much VAT is included in a price I already have?
Switch to "Remove VAT" mode and enter the VAT-inclusive (gross) price. The calculator divides it by 1 plus the VAT rate to find the net amount, then shows the VAT portion as the difference between the two.
