How unit conversion works

Most conversions in this tool work by scaling through a common base unit for each category — for example, every length unit converts to and from metres internally, so converting feet to yards means feet → metres → yards. Temperature is the one exception, since Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin scales don't share a zero point, so they need their own conversion formulas rather than a single multiplier.

Worked examples

10 miles converts to 16.09 km (10 × 1.609344). 5 kilograms converts to about 11.02 lb (5 × 2.20462). 20°C converts to 68°F using (20 × 9/5) + 32. 2 UK gallons converts to about 9.09 litres (2 × 4.54609).

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert miles to kilometres?

Multiply miles by 1.609344 to get kilometres — 1 mile is exactly 1,609.344 metres. So 10 miles = 16.09344 km. To go the other way, divide kilometres by 1.609344, or multiply by 0.621371.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. So 20°C = (20 × 1.8) + 32 = 68°F. To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, rearrange it: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.

How do I convert kilograms to pounds?

Multiply kilograms by 2.20462 — 1 kg = 2.20462 lb. So 5 kg ≈ 11.02 lb. To convert pounds to kilograms, divide by 2.20462, or multiply by 0.453592.

Are UK and US gallons or pints the same size?

No. A UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 litres, while a US gallon is about 3.785 litres — roughly 20% smaller. This converter treats them as separate units so you can convert to and from either one correctly.

Why does data storage use 1,024 instead of 1,000?

This converter uses the binary convention (1 KB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MB = 1,024 KB, and so on), which is how operating systems typically report file and disk sizes — as opposed to the decimal convention (1,000-based) that storage manufacturers often use on packaging.
