Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. A £50 bill with a 12% tip: 50 × (12 ÷ 100) = £6 tip, for a total of £56.
How is a split bill divided between people?
The tip amount and the grand total are each divided evenly by the number of people. For a £50 bill with a 12% tip split 4 ways: £6 total tip ÷ 4 = £1.50 tip per person, and £56 total ÷ 4 = £14 per person.
What is a typical tip percentage?
This varies a lot by country and context — commonly 10-15% at UK restaurants (and often already included as a discretionary "service charge" on the bill, worth checking before adding another tip on top), and historically 15-20% in the US. There's no universal rule; use whatever is customary where you are.
