Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

A slug is the human-readable part of a URL that identifies a specific page, usually derived from its title — e.g. the slug for a page titled "10 Best Coffee Shops" might be 10-best-coffee-shops. Slugs are lowercase, use only letters, numbers, and a separator, and avoid spaces or special characters that would need to be encoded in a URL.

What happens to accented characters and punctuation?

Accented letters are converted to their closest plain-ASCII equivalent (é becomes e, ñ becomes n), and anything that isn't a letter or number — punctuation, symbols, extra spaces — is replaced with the separator, then any repeated or leading/trailing separators are cleaned up.

Should I use a hyphen or an underscore in a slug?

Hyphens (kebab-case) are the near-universal convention for URL slugs, and Google has historically treated hyphens as word separators for SEO purposes but not underscores, treating an underscore-joined phrase as one word instead of several. Use kebab-case for URLs; snake_case is more common for things like filenames or database identifiers.
