Why does the checker ignore spaces and punctuation?
Because most well-known phrase palindromes only work once you strip formatting — "A man, a plan, a canal: Panama" only reads the same backwards as "amanaplanacanalpanama", not with its spaces and punctuation intact. Checking letters only (case-insensitive) matches how palindromes are conventionally judged.
