Frequently asked questions

What is the error correction level, and which should I choose?

QR codes embed extra error-correction data so they still scan even if part of the code is dirty, damaged, or obscured. Low recovers from about 7% damage, Medium about 15%, Quartile about 25%, and High about 30% โ€” higher levels make the code more robust but also larger/denser, since more of its capacity goes to error correction instead of your actual data. Medium is a reasonable default for most uses; use High if the code might get printed small, scratched, or partially covered (e.g. with a logo).

Is there a limit to how much text I can encode?

Yes โ€” this generator supports QR versions 1 through 10 (not the full range up to 40), which comfortably covers URLs and short-to-medium text: up to roughly 271 bytes at the lowest error correction level, less at higher levels. That's plenty for virtually any URL and most short messages; very long text will show an error asking you to shorten it or lower the error correction level.

How was this QR encoder built?

From scratch, following the ISO/IEC 18004 QR code specification directly โ€” Reed-Solomon error correction, the standard data-placement zigzag, all 8 masking patterns scored to pick the best one, and format/version information โ€” rather than using a third-party library. It was verified with an independently-written decoder that reconstructs the original text from the generated code across many versions, error correction levels, and inputs (including emoji and multi-byte text), confirming the output is genuinely scannable, not just QR-shaped.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No โ€” the QR code is generated entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is transmitted anywhere.
