How currency conversion works
Converting between currencies means multiplying your amount by an exchange rate β how many units of the target currency one unit of the source currency is worth. This converter uses the European Central Bank's official daily reference rates rather than an estimate, so figures reflect the real wholesale market rather than a marked-up retail rate.
Worked example
If GBP/USD is 1.27 (one pound buys $1.27), converting Β£500 to US dollars is Β£500 Γ 1.27 = $635. Converting the other way, $635 to GBP, is $635 Γ· 1.27 = Β£500 β the same rate applied in reverse.
Frequently asked questions
Where do these exchange rates come from?
Rates are the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, fetched live via the Frankfurter API. The ECB publishes them once each TARGET business day at around 16:00 CET, based on a regular daily procedure among EU central banks.
How often do the exchange rates update?
Once per business day, when the ECB publishes its new reference rates. They don't update on weekends or ECB holidays, so the rate shown on a Saturday will be Friday's.
Will I get this exact rate at my bank or a currency exchange?
No. This is the ECB's wholesale reference rate, not a retail rate β banks, card providers, and currency exchanges add their own margin (a spread and/or a fee) on top, so the amount you actually receive or pay will differ, sometimes by several percent.
How many currencies does this converter support?
All 30 currencies the ECB publishes daily reference rates for, including GBP, USD, EUR, JPY, and other major world currencies.
