Frequently asked questions

How does the JSON/XML conversion handle attributes?

XML attributes become object keys prefixed with @ (e.g. <item id="1"> becomes {"@id": "1"}), and any direct text content becomes a "#text" key. This is a common convention for representing XML as JSON, though not a universal standard โ€” XML and JSON don't map perfectly onto each other, since XML has attributes and mixed content that JSON has no equivalent for.

Why does CSV conversion only accept a flat array of objects?

CSV is inherently tabular โ€” rows and columns โ€” so it can only sensibly represent a list of flat records, like [{"name":"Ada","age":30}, ...]. Deeply nested JSON (objects inside objects, arrays of arrays) has no natural CSV representation, so converting nested JSON to CSV will show an error asking for a flatter structure instead of silently producing something misleading.

What YAML features aren't supported?

This converter handles the YAML most people actually write by hand: nested mappings and sequences, plain and quoted scalars, comments. It doesn't support flow-style collections ({a: 1} or [1, 2]), anchors/aliases (&ref / *ref), multi-document files (separated by ---), or block scalars (| and > for literal/folded multi-line strings) โ€” these are less common in simple config files but do appear in more advanced YAML.

Is my data sent anywhere during conversion?

No โ€” every format is parsed and converted entirely in your browser (XML parsing uses the browser's own built-in DOMParser; JSON, YAML, and CSV are parsed by this site's own code). Nothing you paste in is transmitted anywhere.
